The Global Citizens’ Initiative defines a global citizen as “someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices.” Historically, human beings have always formed communities based on shared identity. More and more, as the 21st Century unfolds, we are becoming a global community because of what we share. Thanksgiving is a perfect opportunity to reflect upon what it means to be a global citizen to make the world a better place.
Thanksgiving is a holiday that takes on many different forms around the world. Some countries have been inspired by the U.S. holiday, while others have origins of their own. On this day, we reflect upon being thankful for the food on our table, for good health, for loved ones and time shared, and for our freedoms and those who have defended our human rights. We remind ourselves that there is always something to be thankful for.
As Global Citizens, we are thankful for the opportunity to reach out to those less fortunate to offer what we might. We are thankful for the opportunity to give for the sake of giving.
It is a day of thanks and a day of giving.
