Growth Mindset Vs Fixed Mindset

Today, as professional educators and lifelong learners, we know that it is not only what you learn but how you learn and how you approach learning. At New York Academy we guide our students and faculty to exercise a growth mindset. Consider the following compare and contrast statements:

  • With a growth mindset we think in terms of “I can do anything I want,” whereas with a fixed mindset we think in terms of “I can either do it or I can’t.”
  • With a growth mindset we think in terms of “I like to try new things,” whereas with a fixed mindset we think in terms of “I stick to what I know.”
  • With the growth mindset, we think in terms of “Failure is an opportunity to grow,” whereas with a fixed mindset we think in terms of “Failure shows my limitations for growth.”
  • With a growth mindset we think in terms of “Challenges help me to grow,” whereas with a fixed mindset we think in terms of “I don’t like to be challenged.”
  • With a growth mindset we think in terms of “Persistence and determination helps to overcome difficulties,” whereas with a fixed mindset we think in terms of “When I am frustrated I give up.”
  • With a growth mindset we think in terms of “My effort and attitude determine my abilities,” whereas with a fixed mindset we think in terms of “My abilities are unchanging.”
  • With a growth mindset we think in terms of “Feedback is constructive,” whereas with a fixed mindset we think in terms of “Feedback and criticism are personal.”

It is important for us to exercise and maintain a growth mindset.

At New York Academy we are committed to learning to learn.
